History
Garland Writing Instruments, formerly Lew Manufacturing Co., was founded in 1927 by Louis Lanoie. The company got its start by manufacturing small presses that led to the design and development of the internal pen mechanism later used by many of the major pen and pencil manufacturers throughout the United States and Europe. In the 60’s, Lew Manufacturing started making complete pens and pencils and changed its name to Garland Industries.
Garland became a charter member of the ASI (Advertising Specialty Institute) in 1965. Garland is proud of its many notable accomplishments and is one of the original designers and patent holders for the twist action pen mechanism. Garland products have flown on both the Apollo moon missions and many of the Space Shuttle missions. In 1969 Garland developed the Photo Top pen to provide exceptional promotional value. The Flare Top design and the Photo Top Pen has become a unique signature of our writing instruments. The Becker Manufacturing Company purchased Garland Writing Instruments in May of 2013. Finally, in June 2021, Pen Company of America, LLC acquired Garland Writing Instruments and moved all production to their facility in Garwood, NJ.
